DJ/production team, Roulier and Sabo are better known collectively as Manufactured Superstars. How do you know these guys? Probably from their off the hook beats and their infamous matching NASA space suits and plastic black rimmed “nerd glasses”. These are the guys you wish would show up at every house party you have and we were pretty stoked to get a chance to sit down and chat with them.
For those of our readers who are unfamiliar with your sound, what three words would you use to describe your music?
Brad Roulier of Manufactured Superstars: Fun, fun, fun! [laughs]
Did you both always know that you wanted to me in the music industry? How did you get started?
I started as a promoter in 1997 throwing the biggest events in Colorado. Shawn was a jungle and drum-and-bass producer starting in 1999. Then we started Beatport in 2004; so, yes, we are products of EDM.
You were originally called Digitally Manufactured Superstars. What made you shorten in to Manufactured Superstars? Didn’t feel so digital after all?
Manufactured Superstars is long enough, but we are all digital.
You’ve played at a ton of amazing music festivals. What makes playing a festival so unique? What is your favorite festival to play? Any that you haven’t played that you’d like to?
Electric Daisy Carnival is our favorite and we plan on playing some of the EDC festivals in the UK and Europe.
You’re known to play a lot of great “old school tracks.” If you could do a show with any other artist, dead or alive, who would it be?
Bell Biv DeVoe. [laughs] No, it would be Deadmau5, Tiësto and David Guetta. We are fortunate enough to open for them, on occasion.
Your video for “Take Me Over” shows a typical night out in Las Vegas? What’s the craziest night out you’ve had?
We play 25 times-a-year out there, and about two each year are not crazy! [laughs] Most nights end up in the casino, strip club, a bungalow or a penthouse suite, all with our spacesuits still on! [laughs] What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas or gets tagged on Twitter or Facebook. [laughs]
That video is awesome – I particularly like the jumpsuit-clad ladies in the bear masks! If you could pick any celebrity to crawl over to you in a bikini and a bear mask, who would you pick?
Britney Spears or Jennifer Lopez.
What do we have to look forward to from Manufactured Superstars?
Keep on rockin’ the party, having fun, getting girls going crazy on the dancefloor….and…[laughs]
What’s your favorite club to play?
Beta in Denver, and XS in Las Vegas.
Who is the craziest artist to play a show with?
You’re on the road a lot. What’s your favorite time of year to be at home?
Track you’re most proud of?
Tiësto & Kaskade ft Haley, “Only You” (Manufactured Superstars Remix).
That’s a loaded question! We know so many incredible DJs/producers both personally and professionally, and it’s impossible to pick one as any kind of favorite. Favorite collaborator? Or favorite to party with? Or favorite to play in a live set? Or favorite to dance to alone at home? Favorite to listen to while driving in the car? You can see what I mean. So, I’ll leave this one unanswered. [laughs]
What’s the most embarrassing track you have on your iPod?
Barry Manilow, “Copacabana.”
Do you have any superstitions or lucky charms?
What’s on your rider?
Beer, vodka, lots of water….and nerd glasses. The audience ends up wearing the nerd glasses! [laughs]
