Grand Central + Poplife present

Merrill Garbus has performed as tUnE-yArDs since 2009. First gaining notice with the debut BiRd-BrAiNs, which The New York Times called “a confident do-it-yourselfer’s opening salvo: a staticky, low-fi, abrasive attention-getter,” Garbus forged a reputation as a formidable live presence through relentless touring. In 2011, tUnE-yArDs released its second album, w h o k i l l, a startling and sonically adventurous statement that led to a whirlwind period where Garbus and bassist Nate Brenner accrued accolades from critics (including the #1 spot on the Village Voice’s 2011 Pazz and Jop poll), performed around the world, and collaborated with the likes of Yoko Ono and ?uestlove. The stunning third album, Nikki Nack, was released in 2014 via 4AD and features work with producers John Hill (Rihanna, Shakira, M.I.A.) and Malay (Alicia Keys, Frank Ocean, Big Boi). It’s a showcase of how Garbus’s songwriting has blossomed, and a testament to how current technologies can combine with themes from the past—Saturday mornings spent watching Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, puppet shows based on Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal, hard days made less so by the refuge provided by top-40 radio—to create something utterly original.

Son Lux is Ryan Lott, most recognized for a post-rock and alternative hip hop musical style that has won him many awards. He created the soundtracks for four major feature films, most notably Looper (2012) and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby (2013), plus television (Parks and Recreation, American Horror Story). He has scored commercials for an impressive list of clients such as Absolut, IKEA, Coca-Cola, Audi and many others. Lott has built an impressive list of collaborators including everyone from indie-rock darlings such as Sufjan Stevens, Peter Silberman (The Antlers), These New Puritans, My Brightest Diamond; to composers and classical world institutions such as Nico Muhly, Richard Perry (Arcade Fire), Judd Greenstein, yMusic, ETHEL, and Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw; to rappers Serengeti, Busdriver and Beans (Antipop Consortium).
