Antigua is owner Mario Espinosa’s dream realized. Mario, the fifth of seven children born to traditional Mexican parents, first discovered his passion for food in his mother Maria’s kitchen. She created delicate, loving dishes for the family table. They were so loving, Mario had no idea he was growing up poor. In the Espinosa home, pockets may have been empty, but hearts and bellies were always full. While his mother spread the warmth with her food, Mario’s bohemian father Jose spread it with music. Jose was an accomplished guitarist and tenor who toured with the famed trio Los Panchos in the 1940s. His passion for music radiated throughout his home long after he stopped touring, passing on his love for music to the entire family, including a young Mario. Not surprisingly, the inspiration for this eatery and bar came from a desire to extend the warmth of his early years to others … food, music and a loving vibe.
The home of Antigua is no stranger to Montebello residents or its surrounding communities. The building, which was constructed in 1963, has seen many architectural transformations, all unlike this bistro. Every detail has been perfected over a nine-month renovation process. Seating is casual with an upscale flair, from the rustic chandeliers to the Latin-inspired artwork and photographs adorning the interior. Guests can expect a vibrant, warm, and refined atmosphere filled with music and mouthwatering aromas. Simply walking in is an experience.
Upon sitting down to dine, guests will be handed an expertly prepared menu by a member of Antigua’s amiable staff. The menu was created by Executive Chef Johnny Rodriguez with one mission in mind: to fuse traditional rustic plates and the culinary creativity of contemporary fine dining into perfectly balanced, delectable dishes. But the Antigua adventure does not stop with the food. This bistro features a full bar (The Beverly), live performances, dancing, art exhibits, wine tasting, bottomless mimosa brunches and more.
The Antigua family cordially invites you into our exciting, culturally rich home.
