Originally opened in 1940, Bruno’s is a San Francisco landmark restaurant, lounge and live music club. Bruno’s retro spirit starts at the building’s facade, with the original sign and striped awning, and continues through the interior with high backed booths, multi-colored glass cylinder light fixtures, and a 500 gallon saltwater fish tank in the lounge. Live music is performed nightly in the Cork Club, voted best Jazz Club in San Francisco by Zagat Nightlife Guide to the Bay Area.
Chef Chris Pastena serves up soulful Italian-American dishes made from fresh local ingredients and cooked with love. Raised by an Italian-American family from Brooklyn, Pastena spent a great deal of time in his mother and grandmothers’ kitchens, absorbing the sights, smells and techniques of their excellent cooking. He also learned old family recipes while visiting extended family in San Pablo, a town on the foothills of Mt.Vesuvius outside of Naples. Bruno’s is something of a homecoming for Pastena. “Bruno’s is a great setting—it’s straight out of my childhood and I relish the opportunity of approaching these home-style dishes with the tools of professional technique and experience. It gives me great joy to cook honest, traditional food in a classic San Francisco location at prices that allow people to enjoy it as a neighborhood hangout.”
The menu includes appetizers like a perfectly balanced Chopped Salad punctuated with crispy Pancetta bits and fried Garbanzo Beans and Ribollita—a rustic and satisfying white bean soup. Pastas include a meltingly delicious Canelloni a la Romana; Fresh Linguine with Bolognese and a Risotto of the day. Hearty entrees range from Chicken Cacciatore with Fennel Mashed Potatoes to Cioppino and Veal Osso Bucco.
Bruno’s historical significance, trademark plush red leather booths, live music, extensive cocktail list, and affordable dining prices make it a great neighborhood destination.
