Corio

  • Events

From the ground level Corio could easily be an East Village dive, with its uneven tiled floors, worn-wooden tables and bar scattered with older gentlemen. But head for the stairs and you’ll be slapped with a very un-EastVil. mandatory coat check. Fortunately it’s only $2, and it gets you visual access to the regular burlesque shows on floor two, as well as sporadic chic events and impromptu performances. This lounge space is small, but well-planned with tables – accompanied by banquettes, ottomans and scenesters, of course – around the perimeter. A tiny bar is tucked in one corner where regulars sit and chat, and bartenders are sometimes more attractive than the burlesque performers. Drinks are nothing special and kind of pricey, but the spot is on West Broadway. A DJ booth sits next to the stairway, across from the main event space: an individual-sized state, aglow with scarlet spot lights. The dances, a tribute to burlesque legend and lounge namesake Ann Corio, are short bolts of energy, music and nudity. What else could you ask for? (Club Planet description)
