Located on Sainte Catherine Street, in the very heart of downtown Montreal, Métropolis is nowadays a performing arts center and an important landmark of the city’s architectural and cultural heritage.

Its existence of 130 years has been marked by a series of dramatic destructions and resurrections. When opened in 1884 the building housed a skating rink and was soon turned into a summer theater. Severely destroyed by fire at the turn of the century, it was reconstructed and reopened as a theater and then as a cinema in 1923. At the beginning of the 1930s it once again fell victim to a fire.

Shortly after, it was renovated by the celebrated architect Emmanuel Briffa, mostly famous for the décor of the Théâtre Outremont. It reopened as a theater and remained so until the early 1960s when it changed destination once again, becoming an adult cinema. In 1981 it closed its doors only to reopen again 6 years later as a discothèque.

In 1997 the building was bought by L’Équipe Spectra, which turned it into a live performance venue, a purpose that it has served brilliantly up until today. Regarded as one of the best performing arts center by public and artists alike, Métropolis has hosted a great number of memorable concerts by some of the world’s most beloved names. The venue’s hall of fame includes bands and artists such as Rita Mitsouko, Björk, Ben Harper, David Bowie, Bran Van 3000, Coldplay, The White Stripes, Beck, Les Cowboys Fringants, Corneille, and Jean Leloup, the latter being the artist who holds the record of having performed the most concerts at Métropolis. The venue also represents an ideal place for filmings and the highly popular TV program La Fureur has filmed here on various occasions.

Last but not least, Métropolis is a great party destination featuring multiple dance spaces and incredible bars. When in Montreal, make sure you attend an event at this amazing venue or at least pay a visit. With a dramatic past and a dynamic present, Métropolis has plenty of exciting stories to tell its guests.
