Rexall Centre Toronto

The Rexall Centre has been built not only as an international tennis centre but also with the local community in mind. The park-like setting provides dining, shopping and interactive activities to add to the tennis experience.

Canada’s new National Tennis Centre, the Rexall Centre, can be found 1.8km west from Toronto’s city centre on the York University Campus.

The project started in 1990 when the Robbie/Young + Wright Architects was hired to execute a feasibility study of the York University land.

The overall scheme was designed by a ten-member Robbie/Young + Wright team, led by Richard Young, Principal-in-charge. The final site design was arrived at after lengthy consultations with the Toronto Region Conservation Authority, the City of Toronto, Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and local conservation groups including the Humber Alliance and the Black Creek Project.

Both the site layout and centre court facility, modelled after the facility in Key Biscayne, Florida, took approx. one year to design. Special attention has been paid to the location of the facilities required for spectators. This has included a detailed study of sightlines to ensure the best possible viewing conditions from all seats.

The facility is used as corporate office space for Tennis Canada and the Ontario Tennis Association. It will be the home for several community programs, provincial team training, coaching certification courses and national/provincial high-performance programs.

The main contractor for the construction of the CA$45 million Rexall Centre was PCL Constructors Ltd.

Construction was completed in July 2004, in time for the 2004 Tennis Masters Canada.

The 12,500-seat outdoor stadium incorporates 6,000 premium seats, 150 President’s Club Suite seats, 41 exclusive Skylounge suites and 5,500 upper seat stands. The focus of the Rexall Centre is the 16 tennis courts built adjacent to commercial and retail units and a 5,000-seat grandstand court. It will also provide year-round training facilities, community programming and be home to the Ontario Tennis Association and Tennis Canada.

Tennis Canada agreed a ten-year partnership with Katz Group Canada Ltd. for Katz Group Canada to become the primary naming rights partner for the new National Tennis Centre. The new Rexall Centre is named after Katz Group Canada’s private label brand.

The core of the Rexall brand is one of health and wellness with its health products. The Rexall Centre will ensure that the Rogers Cup men and women championships will remain top-notch events on the ATP and the WTA Tour.
